Evaluation of game

In this task we were asked to design a 2D platformer and create it using unreal engine, we had to base it on the classics era so old gods and such.

I started by researching the classics area and 2D games from history, on the classics research I focused on old roman gods based on planets so gods like saturn. I chose these Gods because the style of game I wanted would be in the vein of games such as God of War. After I found out what I wanted to base the games characters on and got the base of the story done I started researching 2D platformers I liked the style of super metroid and more modern flush styles like ori and the blind forest so I eventually went for a mix of both, by that I mean O when for the background pixelated style in the same idea as super metroid and some new modern pixel games but keeping the character looking flush with a smooth character.

Before I started work on the game in the game development software I did more development on the on what the characters and scenery. I wanted to flush out the whole idea of the story and ideas I had on paper before putting them into the game, but after a while I came up with something I felt was good enough to start with the game. The first thing I started work on digitally was the main character, he started as a simple worker but as I developed the world more I made the main character related to the god Saturn making the main character a half god so in turn making him apart of the roman army as that felt more appropriate to the story and thats how I came up with the end design of the character. After I finish that I worked on the scenery I was heavily influenced by other games when in development on the background, I kept in mind what we did before with the desert piece I did, the part of the level I chose was was the beginning of the tutorial when the game starts of in the forest where you live and start you adventure to Rome, I chose this area because it would be the easiest place to show of the stylistic aspect of the game. Now we have the scenery, ground and the player time to up it in the game, although I’ve briefly used unreal engine before I’ve only really used Unty so it was a bit of a change and a learning point for me. To make this I went through many tutorials so I can get the basics done such as running, jumping then I progressed to do health and dieing which was a bit of a task but if I had more time to finish the game I would ad enemies and attacks but this shows what the game would look like. Using the background I created I made earlier I added to the game and made the background parallax when you run across the map.

Overall I am happy with how my game looks and what it’s like at the moment, but I’ll say it again If I had more time I would have made the game have more to it such as attacks and enemies. What could be improved would my work mentality to do work I feel if I did more at home I could have got more done I got more into it at the last few months of 2016 but I will work harder for my end piece. If you want to see the game click on another post with a video of what the game looks like in the software.

Development update of game 13/12/16

This is what the bas level will look like for the tutorial level minus the trees hill incline and house. This was made in photoshop inspired by platformers like Super Metroid and super mario. These layers are all separate so paralaxing isn’t a problem and for easy editing. I work on his from the back forward so sky then mountains and so on.

This is the updated character sprite for running, jumping, sliding and crouching. I did all of these separately using my digital sketch pad to help with making the character look soother. I edged away from the pixelated character as I feel it looks better in the environment and as a character in a smooth form. This was made in photoshop based of the sketch designs I did on paper of the roman solider.

Computer update of levels and stuff

levelBase1.jpglevelBase2.jpgScreen Shot 2016-11-08 at 10.18.53.png

The game will be set in roman times so will show a lot of ancient roman buildings and such. this will who during the level as for the second half of it you’ll be going through Rome fighting minotaur and cyclops’. Unfortunately the level I’m make will only show the tutorial part at the beginning of the game when you’re in the forest  (where you adventure starts.

The other picture is the first computer development of the main character, who started as a random roman man in robes, he got upgraded to Roman soldier/half god to fit the story better. His design got better and left the pixelated design and development when on.

Mood Boards Gods/Styles and such

These are the mood boards for my game, researching and finding inspiration about the gods and what my game will end up looking like. The first one below show how the different roman gods look like and with what they where commonly associated with such as Neptune (God of the sea) with a trident as that’s the weapon he uses. This will all help when making my game because when/if you fight the gods I can use these as abilities ext. After that are pictures of roman and the style of the game that I want, since one of the main part of the first level is in Rome I needed to find pictures as references. I love the way Rome looks in that was in a retro setting,  like how super Metroid looks, I think it’ll work out. The next picture is of different weapon ideas for the main character I needed to go through these getting ideas on what I wanted, at the moment of writing I am leaning toward a large sward (Kind of like Final Fantasy).

Gods mood board, these are representations of what the gods look like according the to the roman/greeks.
Ideas for the styling and places my character will go.

Game research – STARDEW VALLEY

Stardew Valley is an indie farming simulation role-playing video game developed by ConcernedApe and published by Chucklefish Games.

The Strategy

Starting with the strategy of the game, the main purpose of the game is the farm, mine and npc progression to get the ending. So I would say that the main “Strat” would be to farm as much as possible to get money as quick as possible.  But there are so many ways to play this game thats why I like it so much. You could go the mining rout and try to get the best gear and/or go fishing. They are so many ways to play this game so you could rack up so many hours trying the different ways to play the game.

You get literally no information when starting the game apart from the fact you you inherited the farm and its to get you away from city life, to be fair you know the premise before starting he game, but you learn very quickly. You progress by going to the mine and upgrading your gear, selling your goods to get money to use upgrading your farm, increasing the amount of hearts the npcs have with you (how much the like you) then maybe getting married.

You gain more health the more star bits you find but the are incredibly rare and you only get them through progression and getting other rare items to use the get them, this way it stops you for becoming heavily over powered and not a god. This also increases the amount of mana you have because you can only do enough work per day you eventually get tired, because of farming and mining ect, this increases this bar so you can mine longer and fight mobs on lower floors of the mines to get rarer items.

Pay off

Getting money from what you sell. For example getting better gear being to make money quicker. Thats basically it.

Analysis of board game

The goal of monopoly is to accumulate more money by buying more tiles, eventually either becoming bankrupt or having the most money. Though people may play this game by buying everything, what you should be doing is working out which investment will make you the most money and how to use it.

  • Use money wisely
  • increase amount of properties
  • place houses on properties to get more money
  • make others bankrupt

I didn’t fully understand this card game but what I got from it was that the first person to loose all their cards wins you do this by a card battle system where you would fight with the person next to you ending with either the loosing so they pick up the cards or winning where the cards get discarded.

  • Use cards wisely
  • get rid of all your cards
  • consider what other people have so the don’t get dropped on you
  • think basically

Cards against humanity

This is more of a fun (but rude) game which the funniest card wins. You take turn being the card Caesar this person plays the black card (set up card) whilst the others try to make the funniest answer. If you are the funniest you get to keep the black card, so by the end who ever has the most black cards win

  • Be funny
  • Use cards wisely to tailor to the person

About the game – Basic story/treatment

The roman gods abuse their powers because Zeus has a plan to betray earth and enslave human kind. You have to stop the gods by any means necessary.

You are the Son of Saturn (god of time) and have a human mother in which means you can’t live with the gods so you and your mother are banished from Mount Olympus, over the years you live a peaceful life until your farther Saturn comes back from the future to warn you of the destruction of Rome caused by  the gods then Saturn returns to the future leaving you to take out the gods and reclaim you rightful place on Mount Olympus.

The time has come to fight the gods as they seem to be coming down, you first take out Mars (God of war)  in a populated town to prove a point and work you way through the gods. Trying to find your father and keeping Rome safe.

The first level has an intro cut scene where Saturn comes back from the future like I said before, but then you’re in the game when he leaves, you start in your house in the forest away from the city so you have to find your way to Rome. When going through the forest you encounter bears/birds these are basically tutorial enemies to get you used to the controls. You find your sward stuck in the ground and you get going. After the first part of the level you come up to a river where you get in a boat and triggers a cut scene where Pluto (God of the underworld) comes out a fiery pit in the water then tells you ( whilst floating in the air that Rome is falling and there is nothing he can do and that the god of war has taken it over on order by Zeus and that Zeus has seen the light, as he’s doing the right thing (because you know Pluto is evil and Zeus is destroying it) then says bye and leaves through where he came. When you get to Rome Its been take over by the God of war and lots of other enemies like Cyclops’s and Minotaur’s. You fight your way through the mobs till you get to the Roman Coliseum where you have your first boss battle against the god of war. Once you defeat him you hold his dead body up and scream and that’s the first level.

The strategy is to get through the level keeping full health and playing sensibly so you have enough health to survival the boss battle. There will be many ways t get through the levels (hopefully) but you should do the five d’s of dodge ball Dodge, Duck, Dip, Dive and Dodge.

When you start you get a quick introduction to what your doing/the objective the head off to the tutorial forest when you learn the controls ext. You progress by killing each god once you kill them you will heather get a health boost or their ability such as a jump dash or something.

Some of the random mobs can drop health (or something else I’m not sure yet but they drop little health so its not easy to complete the level. You’ll fight smaller enemies to get to the main god boss battles. Like Centaurs, Minotaur’s, Medusa (maybe mid boss) and Typhon. Cyclops’s and Minotaur’s  are the main trash mobs in this level as they are everywhere in Rome. Cyclops’s shoot lasers out there eyes and Minotaur’s charge at you.

Pay Off

The satisfaction of killing the gods and the fact you get more powerful the more gods you kill because you’ll need those powers to kill Zeus.
